NLSLA Stands with City Attorney to Stop Lawyer Preying on Poor
NLSLA attorney Maria Palomares and litigation director Dave Pallack stood with Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer as he announced criminal charges against a man who for years had misrepresented himself as a lawyer in order to take advantage of low-income, predominantly Spanish-speaking people seeking legal assistance. NLSLA attorneys had over the course of several years helped dozens of individuals who were defrauded by Jesus Luna Lozano, and those cases assisted the city attorney’s office in building a criminal case against him.
“We often see ‘notarios’ that prey on immigrant communities, especially the Spanish-speaking low-income community,” said NLSLA attorney Maria Palomares to the Los Angeles Daily News. “People rely on them thinking they know what they’re doing, often to their detriment and often with dire consequences.”
Lozano routinely charged people seeking to recover damages for wrongful terminations or lost wages, but never filed anything on their behalf.
