Client Story: When an Illness is a Symptom of Slum Housing
Ms. King suspected her children’s respiratory illnesses were connected to the broken pipes and mold in her apartment. Unable to get her landlord to address these problems, she continued to bring her children to St. John’s Well Child & Family Center, a community clinic in South Los Angeles, to treat their respiratory symptoms.
After learning of the conditions at Ms. King’s apartment, her physician at St. John’s asked an attorney from Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County, stationed at the clinic as part of a Medical Legal Community Partnership, to assist the family. As a result, the landlord brought the entire premises up to code. Ms. King’s children’s visits for respiratory symptoms dropped dramatically, and the health of her neighbors was improved as well.
